Beware of telemarketing scams

Whilst there are many legitimate companies that use telemarketing legally and professionally, there are a number of rogues out there who are only after one thing: to scam you out of money.

Consumers and businesses alike lose millions of pounds every year as a result of fraud that is committed over the phone.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a genuine telemarketer and a criminal that is set on robbing you blind.

Let’s put it this way: if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

You need to protect yourself or your business by recognizing the signs of fraud. If it is too late, and you have already been the victim of telemarketing fraud, you need to report all the information you have to the appropriate authorities. Those committing fraud over the phone often open and close extremely quickly so they may not even have been publicly identified as fraudsters.

If a company or charity is unfamiliar you need to investigate them thoroughly, especially if you are interested in building a relationship.

How you pay will affect your ability to recoup your losses should your business be the victim of fraud. Paying by cash, cheque or a money order is a huge mistake – at least if you pay by credit card you will be offered some form of fraud protection.

If you run a legitimate telemarketing concern you need to do everything possible to prove you are genuine and make your prospects feel comfortable. Criminal activity has bred scepticism and negative feelings towards telemarketing. A genuine telemarketing company or telesales expert will give you the time you need to feel comfortable about the authenticity and quality of their products or services.
